Plastic animal candle holders

This is a fun craft which reuses those old plastic animals you still have lying around from when you were a kid. Great way to turn boring candle holders into something more fun! They look awesome on cupcakes or just for decoration!

You will need -
  • plastic animals
  • plastic candle holders
  • drill with 1/8″ drill bit OR a screw and screw driver
  • pliers
  • gold spray paint
For the plastic animals, any kind you have is fine. However, keep in mind the size of the cake you want to use them for. Two points to consider- the first, the animals should be able to stand alone- I had a few that topped over so I didn't use those ones. The second thing, the flatter the animal's back, the easier it is to make the hole for the candle holder.

If you have a drill- use it! Hold the animal in pliers and drill straight down (being careful not to pop out the other side!). If you don't have a drill- like me- use a screw and screwdriver and screw it into the animal's back (it's not too difficult).
Put holes like this in each animal

Check the candle holders all fit in the animals' backs. You will need to take them out again to spray paint- this will allow both the holder and animal to be completely covered in paint.

Lightly spray both sides of the animals and candle holder until totally covered. MAKE SURE that your spray paint is one that adheres to plastic. If not, use a primer. Leave for a few hours to make sure they are completely dry before putting back together.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial- this is the video which accompanies this post:
